Vertex's tax determination engine is the thing I want to talk about, because it's genuinely impressive on a level I didn't expect from a product aimed at enterprise clients. Our small team handles indirect tax across multiple states, and the rules engine lets me build jurisdiction-specific logic without touching a line of code. I can layer product taxability mappings, exemption certificates, and sourcing rules all in one place. A year in, I've barely scratched the surface of what it can do, which is both exciting and a little humbling.
Setup took longer than I'd hoped, and onboarding support was thorough but dense. There's a learning curve that a four-person finance team feels more sharply than a big enterprise would. That said, the accuracy I get on complex multi-state transactions alone makes it worth every hour I put into configuration. If precision in indirect tax calculation matters to you, Vertex delivers it consistently.
