Carrier data quality is what finally broke me. After years of managing shipper clients through a competing directory platform, I kept hitting the same wall: outdated contact info, missing authority numbers, carriers that had folded two years prior still showing as active. My clients were making decisions based on garbage. Switching to The DOT Directory was less a product upgrade and more a relief. The coverage across both Canada and the US is genuinely comprehensive in a way the old platform never managed, and I stopped fielding apologetic calls from clients who'd tried to book a carrier that no longer existed.
What's better here, specifically: the data freshness. I don't know exactly how they maintain it, but after five-plus years of daily use on behalf of multiple clients, I can count on one hand the times I've caught a significant error. The old tool felt like it was refreshed quarterly, maybe. The DOT Directory feels like something is actually watching those records. Search and filtering have also improved considerably since I first started, and the interface has never given my less tech-comfortable clients any real trouble.
The one area where the previous platform had a slight edge was in bulk export options. You could pull large custom lists in a few clicks. The DOT Directory's export workflow takes a few more steps, which matters when I'm prepping data sets for larger shippers. It's a minor friction point, not a dealbreaker. Overall, if you're sourcing or vetting carriers across North America and you're still on whatever tool you've been tolerating for years, this is worth a serious look.
