Switching from our previous tax platform was something I dreaded, but six months in, I'm genuinely glad we made the move. The thing that immediately stood out was how Vertex handles multi-jurisdiction sales tax rules. Our old tool required constant manual overrides whenever nexus rules changed. Vertex just... handles it. The indirect tax engine is noticeably more accurate, and the audit trail reporting has saved me real time during reconciliations. For a small team like ours, that reliability matters more than any bells and whistles.
That said, the onboarding process was rougher than I expected. Getting Vertex configured correctly for our specific use case took longer than the implementation docs suggested, and their support response times during that window were inconsistent. Once we were past setup, things smoothed out considerably. Customer service has since improved, or maybe we just know how to ask better questions now. If you're coming from a lighter-weight tool, budget more ramp-up time than they tell you. Still, the accuracy and compliance confidence this gives me makes the 4 stars feel right.
