Setting up Wave for a new client used to be the part of my week I dreaded most. Complicated software, confusing permissions, too many steps before anything useful happens. Wave genuinely changed that experience. The first time I onboarded a client through it, I had their chart of accounts connected, invoicing configured, and a basic dashboard ready in under two hours. No tutorial rabbit holes, no support tickets. For a small agency managing books on behalf of five or six clients at a time, that kind of fast start matters a lot.
A year in, the software still earns its place. The invoicing and payment tracking tools are straightforward, and my clients can actually log in and understand what they're looking at without me holding their hand. The one real frustration is customer support. When something does go sideways, getting a timely human response is harder than it should be. For simple issues that's fine. For anything urgent, you're on your own longer than you'd like. Still, given that the core product is free and genuinely functional, I'd point most small business clients toward it.
